Last year the hospital established a Volunteer Service Award to recognize volunteers’ exceptional service, support and commitment to the Hospital’s mission. This award is presented quarterly to a volunteer who demonstrates exceptional service with compassion, dedication, respect, teamwork, and commitment to excellence.
On August 19, 2008 Hospital President Cliff Coker presented volunteer Edna Sund with a Volunteer Service Award. Edna received two nominations for the award. Both the staff in Pastoral Care Department as well as a fellow volunteer nominated Edna for the award for her exceptional service.
On the nomination form, specific examples were provided as to how Edna demonstrates exceptional service, support and commitment to the Hospital’s mission.
Compassion: Edna inquires daily as to the health and welfare of her co-workers and takes a genuine interest in her co-workers’ well-being.
Dedication: For the past 20 years, Edna has been a faithful volunteer, contributing over 10,000 hours of volunteer support to the hospital. She currently works two full days a week in the Pastoral Care Department.
Respect: Edna is respectful of everyone and treats all with high regard.
Collaboration/Teamwork: Edna is a true team player and has developed ideas that help the team in Pastoral Care Dept.
Commitment to Excellence: She is respectful of the confidential aspects of her duties and maintains patient confidentiality at all times.

After working for General Motors for 22 years in the Accounts Receivable Department, Edna came to SJMC as a volunteer in 1988. Over the past twenty years, Edna has volunteered at the hospital in a variety of assignments, including Patient Transport Department, Auxiliary Treasurer and most recently Pastoral Care Department two days a week.
St. John Medical Center recently announced Dolores Medevec as the recipient of the Volunteer Service Award. This award is presented quarterly to a volunteer who demonstrates exceptional service with compassion, dedication, respect, teamwork, and commitment to excellence.
Before Delores began volunteering in 1993 at St. John Medical Center, she worked at Ohio Bell where she was the Assistant of Personnel. She faithfully volunteers several times a week and has contributed nearly 5,500 hours of volunteer service to the organization. Not only does she perform volunteer work at the Hospital, but she also goes the extra mile to be helpful by performing clerical functions from her home. Dolores provides support and shares her skills with numerous departments within the hospital, including the Volunteer Services Department, Staff Development, Human Resources Department, and the 3North Unit at St. John Medical Center. She also helps with special projects such as the Festival of the Arts, the Bravo Recognition Awards, and the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner.
Delores was described as being a kind, friendly, dedicated, dependable, and courteous person. "Dolores is willing to help so many departments. She demonstrates teamwork and we are honored to have her as part of our 3North team."
Gordon has been a SJMC volunteer for 13 years. He volunteers two afternoons a week in Patient Transport, in addition to serving as a Facilitator for the Diabetes Support Group. He makes sure a patient’s needs are of the highest priority. Gordon is a pleasure to work with. He is friendly, helpful and the picture of efficiency. Gordon is one of those people I smile when I see. He makes our day better!
Gordon Hall traveled extensively during his long career as a US Coast Guard Officer. After thirty years of service Gordon retired as the Chief of Operations in the Cleveland District. Gordon subsequently assumed the position of Vice President for the Lake Carriers’ Association, a trade association representing U.S.Flag vessel operators on the Great Lakes, for ten years before he retired for a second time. Gordon has done volunteer work in his hometown community of North Olmsted, coaching athletics and serving as the Tournament Director for the North Olmsted Soccer Organization. Gordon can be found volunteering in Patient Transport on Sunday and Monday afternoons. He is also an active member of the Volunteer Focus Group. To date, he has contributed close to 4,000 hours of volunteer service to the hospital.
St. John Medical Center announced on November 13, 2007 that Mary Sexton is the recipient of the Volunteer Service Award. This award is given quarterly to a volunteer in appreciation and recognition of the volunteers' exceptional service, support and commitment to the Hospital's mission.
Mary was born in Ireland and is a retired Registered Nurse. She has volunteered at St. John Medical Center since 1982. She volunteers twice a week, both in Patient Transport and the Pastoral Care Department as a Eucharistic Minister. Nomination comments like, “Mary treats everyone in a very respectful and dignified manner. She is a strong advocate for patients ensuring their comfort and safety,” and “Mary always has an encouraging word for everyone and is ready to help wherever her services are needed,” truly show why Mary won this award. Congratulations!
St. John Medical Center held a ceremony on August 8, 2007 to present Ross Reid with a special Volunteer Service Award.
Ross Reid has been a volunteer at the Hospital for the past seven years and helps in the Pharmacy Department at least two afternoons a week. Nominated by the staff in Pharmacy, Ross was commended for his sense of compassion, teamwork and dedication, noting that he often comes in extra on holidays to support the staff. Ross was described as “always having a smile on his face and willing to help the staff in whatever capacity he is needed.” Ross also volunteers to help out at many for Hospital special events including the annual Festival of the Arts.
Ross is a retired salesman and lives in Avon with his wife, Dolores who also was a Hospital volunteer for many years.
Westlake - St. John Medical Center recently announced Chuck Greiner and Evelyn Bott as the recipients of the Volunteer Service Award. The Volunteer Service Award is presented to volunteers who embody compassion, dedication, respect, teamwork, and who remain committed to excellence. This award began in the Fall of 2006, with volunteer Howard (Hap) Holleman as its first recipient.
Chuck Greiner has been a member of St. John Medical Center Volunteer Staff since 1993. He has been a part of the Patient Transportation Department for nearly 14 years and because of his kind, welcoming personality he often takes part in orienting new volunteers. Chuck retired from pharmaceutical sales in 1988, and since that time has enjoyed being with family and friends.
Evelyn Bott has been a member the of St. John Medical Center Volunteer community for more than 20 years. She began volunteering in the Obstetrics Department and for the past 18 years she has volunteered in the Emergency Department. Evelyn has volunteered over 18,000 hours and feels that SJMC is her home away from home. She enjoys being part of the SJMC family and is a warm, friendly face to patients who enter the hospital, often times under stressful conditions.
Chuck and Evelyn’s compassion, dedication, respect, teamwork and commitment to excellence is why they are the recipients of the Volunteer Service Award.
