Drs. Sertich and Hazen Appointed Co-Medical Directors of Spine Center

St. John Medical Center has announced the appointments of Dr. Gale Hazen and Dr. Mario Sertich as co-medical “spine” directors of the hospital’s newly opened Spine & Orthopedic Center. In their new roles, Dr. Hazen and Dr. Sertich will jointly oversee all medical and clinical aspects of the “spine” center. Cliff Coker, president of St. John Medical Center, made the announcement.

Dr. Gale Hazen “We are extremely pleased to have Drs. Hazen and Sertich leading the Spine & Orthopedic Center’s team of highly-skilled surgeons and multidisciplinary experts,” Coker said. “They both possess exemplary reputations in their field, as well as extraordinary clinical and surgical talents that position them to effectively lead the development of The Spine & Orthopedic Center.”

Dr. Hazen, a Board Certified neurosurgeon, is a graduate of Rush Medical College. He completed his training at the Neuropsychiatric Institute and the University of North Dakota School of Medicine in Fargo, N.D. in 1978. He served as a clinical assistant professor at The University of North Dakota from 1982 to 1991. For the past 15 years, Dr. Hazen has been in practice with Neurological Services Inc., serving Lorain and Western Cuyahoga counties. Dr. Hazen is an active member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the National Association of Spine Surgeons, the Ohio State Neurosurgical Society, the Ohio State Medical Association and the Lorain County Medical Society. Additionally, he serves as an Ohio State Medical Association state delegate and Ohio State chairman of organized medical staff section and is a Colonel in the United States Air Force Reserves.

Dr. Mario Sertich Dr. Sertich is a Board Certified neurosurgeon who has practiced neurosurgery in Lorain County since 1981. He joined Neurological Services Inc., after graduating from the Baylor Neurosurgery training program in Houston, Texas. The Medtronic Corporation is currently evaluating his recent United States patent of a spinal fusion cage. Dr. Sertich currently serves as the secretary of the Ohio Neurosurgical Society. He is also an active member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the National Association of Spine Surgeons, the Ohio State Neurosurgical Society, the Ohio State Medical Association and the Lorain County Medical Society.
