In January 2008 Dr. Gregory Bloxdorf was appointed the President of the Ohio Osteopathic Director’s of Medical Education. Prior to becoming President of the organization, Dr. Bloxdorf held the positions of Vice President (Jan. 2005-Jan. 2008) and Secretary/Treasurer (2002-Jan.2005.) Dr. Bloxdorf has been an attending physician in the St. John West Shore Hospital Emergency Department since 1998, and he is the current Director of Medical Education since September 1999. In addition, Dr. Bloxdorf has been the Emergency Medicine Residency Program Director since 2000, and the Internship Program Director since 2002. He is a Clinical Professor for Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine and a Clinical Assistant Professor for Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine.
As Director of Medical Education at St. John West Shore, Dr. Bloxdorf oversees the Internship and Residency training programs in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, the Combined Internal Medicine/Emergency Medicine program and the Family Practice program. Under his leadership as Director of Medical Education, the residency training programs have graduated 92 Interns and 64 Residents since the program began in 1998.
Dr. Bloxdorf attended Gannon University in his hometown of Erie, Pennsylvania, where he received a Bachelor of Science. He then attended University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kansas City, Missouri. Dr. Bloxdorf did his Emergency Medicine Residency training at Brentwood Hospital and Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital. Dr. Bloxdorf was the Assistant Director of the Emergency Department from the time he came to St. John West Shore in 1998 until 2005. Dr. Bloxdorf is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine and is a Fellow of both the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians and the American College of Emergency Physicians.
Dr. Bloxdorf has been a great asset to the St. John West Shore and Ohio Osteopathic Medical Education communities. He continues to work as Attending Physician in the Emergency Department. He has served on numerous committees at St. John West Shore including the Medical Executive Committee, Critical Care Committee, Continuing Medical Education, Code Blue/Rapid Response Team, Credentials Committee, Trauma/Disaster, Institutional Review Board and is the Chair of the Graduate Medical Education Committee. Dr. Bloxdorf is a member of five Center of Osteopathic Research and Education committees including CORE Board, CORE Finance Committee and CORE Academic Steering Committee.

Graduate Medical Education at St. John West Shore Hospital participated in a Professional Panel for Westlake High School's career day. St. John West Shore employees Amy Sharp, a Registered Radiologic Technologist, Karen Rambasek and Jen Mogus, nurses in orthopedics, Anthony Rozzo, D.O. and Lacey Zimmerman spoke to students about their career paths. Dr. Rozzo, an Internal Medicine/Emergency Medicine Resident and an Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine 2004 graduate, talked to the students about his educational background, why he wanted to be a physician, and the challenges and rewards of being a physician. Lacey Zimmerman, a 2003 Westlake High School alumnus and 2007 Ohio University graduate, spoke to the students about the field of Healthcare Administration, as well as her educational background and continuing graduate education.
By listening to Dr. Rozzo and Lacey speak about their careers, the students were able to realize the career opportunities available to them in the diverse field of healthcare. A thank you letter to Lacey from one student said "It's great to see someone who really graduated from Westlake High, and got into a good career path. Sometimes you need to see something like that to make people push for their goals."
Another addition has been made to the growing Graduate Medical Education program at St. John West Shore Hospital. Dr. Andrew Filiatraut has been appointed Assistant Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program. He will work closely with the Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency program Dr. Michael Adornetto, as well as other Program Directors in the Medical Education office.
Prior to his residency training, Dr. Filiatraut received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Dayton in 1997. After graduating from the University of Dayton he went on to the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he graduated in 2001 as a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Andrew Filiatraut completed an Internal Medicine Track Internship as well as an Internal Medicine/Emergency Medicine Residency at St. John West Shore Hospital. During the last year of his residency Dr. Filiatraut held the position of Chief Resident of the Internal Medicine/Emergency Medicine Residency. Dr. Filiatraut was a member of the Critical Care Committee at St. John West Shore Hospital from 2005-2007. During his residency he received two awards for Outstanding Resident of the Year. Dr. Filiatraut has been practicing as part of Superior Medical Care and Emergency Physicians Services/Team Health Midwest since July 2007.
Dr. Filiatraut has participated actively in the Medical Education Program since his residency, and he is another great addition to the Medical Education staff. His work as Assistant Program Director will help train more outstanding physicians. Dr. Filiatraut said, "I am excited and honored to be appointed to this position. I hope to bring some enthusiasm to the residency and I look forward to working with all the interns and residents."
Effective July 1, 2007 David Tolentino, D.O. has been appointed Interim CORE Assistant Dean at St. John West Shore Hospital. Dr. Tolentino will monitor 3rd and 4th year Medical Students' performance and progress as they complete their clinical rotations at St. John West Shore Hospital. He will work to ensure that students receive the best medical education through overseeing weekly lectures and clinical rotation schedules. As Interim CORE Assistant Dean, Dr. Tolentino will serve as a liaison between the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine and St. John West Shore Hospital. Dr. Tolentino said "I am really excited about my new position as Interim CORE Assistant Dean. I hope we can continue to make a positive impact on the education and careers of our young, student physicians."
Dr. Tolentino has been an active member of St. John West Shore Hospital's Medical Education program. He completed his clinical rotations as a medical student, as well as his internship and residency programs in Internal Medicine at St. John West Shore. During his residency, Dr. Tolentino served as Internal Medicine chief resident. Until he was appointed Interim CORE Assistant Dean, Dr. Tolentino was Graduate Medical Education Assistant. Dr. Tolentino has been a Clinical Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine for Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine since 2006. He was recently honored with the Jack J. Brill, D.O. Outstanding Physician Award at the 2007 St. John West Shore Graduate Medical Education Graduation Ceremony.
After graduating as valedictorian from St. Edward High School he went on to complete his B.A. in Chemistry at Case Western Reserve University where he graduated magna cum laude. Dr. Tolentino graduated as a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He has been practicing at West Shore Primary Care Associates since 2005. Dr. Tolentino serves on multiple committees including the St. John West Shore Physician Utilization Review Committee, the St. John West Shore ethics committee, the Cleveland Academy of Osteopathic Medicine Young Physicians Committee and the Graduate Medical Education Committee at St. John West Shore. He is an active member of the West Shore Osteopathic Foundation. Dr. Tolentino is a dedicated physician and an invaluable part of the Medical Education program at St. John West Shore.
Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine has announced that Dr. Stephen Giordano is one of two recipients of The Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award. Dr. Giordano will receive his award at the CORE (Centers for Osteopathic Research and Education) Welcome Dinner on August 16th, where he will also be presented with a specially designed lapel pin and a check from The Gold Foundation.
Dr. Giordano, graduating in June, 2007 as Chief Resident of Internal Medicine at St. John West Shore Hospital, was given this award based on his dedication to teaching and compassionate, patient-centered care. Even with Dr. Giordano's demanding position as Chief of Internal Medicine, he made extra effort to make sure the medical students learned not only the practice of medicine but also the importance of interpersonal communication in patient care. Dr. Giordano is held in high regard by medical students, interns, residents, and attending physicians at St. John West Shore Hospital. He will truly be missed when he relocates to Charlotte, North Carolina to practice as a hospitalist at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.
Dr. Giordano graduated from West Virginia University with a B.A. in Pre-Medicine Biology. He studied Exercise and General Physiology in the graduate studies program at West Virginia University before attending Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine where he graduated as a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Giordano completed his internship in Internal Medicine at Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh and then went on to complete his first year of residency at MetroHealth Medical Center as an Anesthesiology Resident. To complete his residency Dr. Giordano came to St. John West Shore as an Internal Medicine Resident.
