Breast Self-examination

Early detection is the most important factor in the successful treatment of breast cancer. Up to 90% of localized breast cancer is now curable. The key here is in detecting the disease while it is still amenable to cure.

The Department of Health recommends self-examination be performed monthly in all females over age 19. Physician exams are recommended every 3 years in the 20-40 age group and annually in those over 40.

Performing the Exam

  • Stand or sit in front of a mirror with your arms at your sides. Look for any changes in breast shape or size, check for rashes, skin dimpling or discharges from the nipples.
  • Placing your arms over your head, look for the same things as above. Also note every difference in size and shape between breasts.
  • Lie on your back and put a pillow or towel under your right shoulder. Place your right hand under your head and, with the fingers of your left hand held together flat, press gently but firmly to feel the breast tissue. Start on the outside of your breast (near your right armpit) and, using a circular motion, examine around the rim. Bring the arm to your side, and, using the flat part of your fingers, feel under the right armpit.
  • Repeat the entire procedure for the left breast.
