Fibrocystic Breast Disease

Fibrocystic breast disease is a benign condition in which there is an abundance of scar tissue and small cysts in the breasts. This is of no serious concern, but a patient with fibrocystic breast disease will often have painful lumps and bumps which can be confused with cancer. Some experts believe that patients with fibrocystic breast disease have an increased risk of breast cancer.

There is no known cure for this condition, but there are ways to control some of the symptoms. Breast pain can increase during certain parts of the monthly menstrual cycle. Breast pain may also increase with the consumption of caffeine or use of birth control pills. Avoidance of beverages containing caffeine is highly recommended.

See your doctor promptly for any suspicious breast lumps.
