Westlake, Ohio: Now fifteen years strong, the St. John Medical Center Festival of the Arts is considered one of the best fine arts and crafts shows in Northeastern Ohio. The Festival will bring more than 200 fine artists and craftpersons from across the country. The 2007 Festival promises to be the best ever, and is expected to draw record crowds to Hospital grounds in Westlake. The 2007 Festival of the Arts will welcome art lovers on the following dates and times: Friday, July 13 from 6 - 9 pm; Saturday, July 14 from 10 am – 7 pm and Sunday, July 15, from 10 am – 5 pm. The Festival of the Arts traditionally falls on the second weekend in July. To assist with parking issues, this year a shuttle bus service will drop off and pick up Festivalgoers at the Church on the Rise on Saturday only.
As in the past, the Festival is free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to bring along nonperishable food items, which will be donated, to local food banks. Also St. John Medical Center’s Community Outreach will offer free health screenings from 11 am - 3 pm on Saturday and Sunday only. The free screenings will include blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose.
“It’s amazing how the event has grown over the years,” says Cliff J. Coker, St. John Medical Center Interim President. “The weekend would not be possible without the tremendous support received by our many sponsors. We also must acknowledge the community for its ongoing patronage. And we can’t overlook our wonderful artists and their creative spirit,” he adds.
The 2007 Festival of the Arts will also feature live musical entertainment, food court and family fun. Situated along a one-half-mile walking track, a diverse representation of mixed media will include jewelry, wearable art, stained glass, basketry, ceramics, watercolors, oils, photography and more. The Festival of the Arts is a juried show and prize money is awarded to winners in several categories.
“As a Catholic Hospital, we have made it a tradition to offer a public Outdoor Mass on Sunday, July 15, at 9 am,” says Coker. “Last year we had several hundred area residents attend the Mass.”
If you’re feeling lucky you can take a chance on WDOK Fifth Third Bank’s popular $102,000 Mega Money Machine that is returning on Saturday and Sunday. The LifeShare Community Blood Services will be on campus for those wishing to donate blood. Live musical entertainment is also part of the Festival of the Arts tradition.
“The St. John Medical Center grounds are a perfect location to host this type of venue,” says Coker. “This event affords us an opportunity in which to thank the community for its on going support.” The event also involves many community groups such the Westlake Music Boosters who sell refreshments throughout the weekend to support band projects. The group also assists with exhibitor set up and clean up. The Westlake High School Prom Committee will also return this year to assist with parking needs. In return, the Prom Committee will receive a donation from the 2007 Festival of the Arts.
